Frequently Asked Questions

How do I place an order?

Please fill out the Memorial Order Request Form Here or email us at dbkglass.shop@gmail.com to discuss the details of your special memorial piece. Please see the options and pricing on the Glass Memorials Page. After we agree upon and confirm the details of your memorial glass piece we will take payment, provide shipping instructions and you can then ship us the cremains.

What is the average waiting period?

The waiting period for a glass memorial may be 3-6 months. We try to keep the average turn around to 3-6 weeks, but times vary depending upon time of year and the amount of orders we have. Please ask at time of order if you are concerned with time or need your piece by a certain date and we will do our best to accommodate. But please do be aware this is not a fast process and not something that should be rushed. We prefer to do things right not do them rushed. We take each order personally via email so we can give each order personalized attention, it can take many emails back and forth and a few days or more to get all of the details figured out if you do not know exactly what you would like. We like to be upfront and communicate openly and not rush these special projects.

How much ashes do I need to send?

We only need about 1 tablespoon of ashes for a single piece of glass. A little goes a long way when encasing ashes in glass so we need very little for each piece. The ashes will be incased inside of the glass and magnified. We will return any unused ashes as well as any unused bits of glass that contain ashes leftover.

What types of ashes can be used?

We are happy to memorialize any living thing from your loved ones to your family pets. If you would like multiple people or animal ashes used please provide information on them all.

What kind of glass do you use?

We use Borosilicate (also known as Boro or Pyrex). It is a type of glass that contains boron and trioxide which allows for a low coeffient of thermal expansion. This means it will not crack as easily under extreme temperature changes like regular glass making it more DURABLE. It's durability has made it the glass of choice for high-end restaurants, laboratories and wineries.

What is the difference between Borosilicate and soda-lime glass?

Many companies choose to use soda-lime glass for their glass products and glass memorials because it is less expensive and readily available. It accounts for 90% of manufactured glass worldwide due to the lower cost and faster production style. Soda lime glass is susceptible to shock and does not handle extreme changes in heat.  The coeffient of soda lime glass is more than double that of borosilicate, meaning it expands more than twice as fast when exposed to heat and will break very quickly. Borosilicate glass has a much higher proportion of silicon dioxide in comparison (80% vs 69%), which makes it even less susceptible to fractures. Because of it's durability and resistance to chemical changes, borosilicate has traditionally been used in chemistry labs and industrial settings, as well as for kitchenware and premium wineglasses. Because of it's superior quality, it is often priced higher than soda lime glass.

Is Borosilicate glass unbreakable?

No, borosilicate glass is not unbreakable. As aforementioned, it is known for its low thermal expansion and high resistance to thermal and chemical stress, it can still break or crack if it is exposed to excessive force or extreme temperatures. It is STRONGER than regular glass but it can still break or crack if it is dropped or hit hard. It is important to handle borosilicate glass with proper care to minimize the risk of breakage. It is a great material for laboratory equipment, cookware, and other applications where heat, chemical resistance, and durability are needed.

Do you do repairs if my Memorial piece breaks?

Yes! If you break or damage your precious Memorial Glass piece we can probably fix it. As long as the piece is not completely shattered the chances are we can repair.  We can put new loops on pendants, fix chips and cracks, repair broken bowls on pipes and put broken pipes back together. Email us photos of the broken piece to discuss further.

What is your return policy?

We do not accept returns or give refunds on cremation memorial pieces. Each memorial piece is lovingly crafted by hand to your specifications as a personal and lasting testament to your loved one. Due to the personal nature of the finished piece and the time and effort put into each one, we regret we are unable to accept returns or issue refunds for custom orders. If we do not make the piece to the agreed upon specifications please email us to discuss and we will take care of you.

How do I ship the cremated remains?

Please label the container with your name, the name of the deceased and the date. Put the container inside a zip lock bag or double bag if using a bag to ensure no leakage. ***IMPORTANT***When you ship you MUST ship UPSP using Priority Express with signature confirmation and notify the post office that you are shipping cremains so they give the package a special label and use more care during the shipping process. USPS is the only legal way to ship cremains.

Do you offer bulk discounts?

Unfortunately we do not offer discounts or bulk deals on memorial pieces. We put a lot of time, love and care into making these special pieces by hand and do not cut corners or mass produce them. There is a high level of difficulty and procedure involved with handling and encasing ashes inside glass. We take extreme measures to ensure each piece is made with the proper ashes. We only work with one order per day so the proper time and care are taken with the cremated remains and the creating of each memorial piece.

Can I provide information about the deceased?

When you send the ashes please include a photo of the person or animal we are making the memorial of, their name and any special details or stories about them. It may sound funny but we like to think of the person and really put some love and positive energy into the glass as they work with the remains when making a memorial piece. We believe glass holds energy and we want to put as much love and care into the memorial pieces as possible to make them truly special. This is optional, but does help the creative process. If you are a private person or it's just too hard to do please don't feel pressure to provide photos or info.

What information do I need to provide?

If you know what you would like made and are ready to place your order please fill out the Memorial Order Request Form here or copy and paste the questions below and email us at dbkglass.shop@gmail.com so we can get things rolling.

1. What type of glass piece would you like? (Examples: Swirling Singularity Marble, Spacey Pendant, Moonstone Marble, Small Inside out Spoon etc.) If you would like an image, symbol or words on your memorial mention that here.

2. Would you like the piece to have silver or gold fuming in the background? The silver appears yellowy/blue/green shades (in a pipe the silver fuming changes after being smoked out of to mainly blues) and the gold appears pinky/copper/purple shades (in a pipe gold fuming changes to mainly purples and blues). If you are unsure write unsure and if you are not ordering anything with fuming write N/A.

3. What colors would you like? On the pieces that are not space themed you get a choice of 2-3 colors or clear for the rods running through out. We infuse the ashes into a stick of glass and then encase that rod inside the glass so as to keep the cremains throughout encapsulated within the layers of glass. You can do additional colors for a small fee.

4. Your name?

5. Your mailing address?

6. Your phone number?

7. Preferred method of payment? Generally I email a payable invoice from PayPal or Square that can be paid securely online with a card or you can mail us a money order or cashiers check if you do not want to do an online payment. The artist will not begin creation until payment is received just fyi.

8. Whose cremains will we be working with? Please send a favorite photo and any special details or stories about your loved one that you would like to share. Our artists like to learn about whomever they are working with so they can keep them in mind and truly put personalized love and care into making a memorial piece. This information is optional and can be provided at the time of order or included in the box with the ashes.

9. Any other important information you would like to share or questions?
